Website redesign or rebuilding from scratch: making the right decision

When changing visual design is enough, and when the technical foundation and architecture must be replaced entirely.

Website redesign versus rebuilding from scratch
Website redesign versus rebuilding from scratch

When a business decides to refresh its digital presence, the main question is whether the old website can be renovated with a new design or should be dismantled to its foundations and replaced with an entirely new modern platform.

Clients often assume a new design on an old website will be cheaper. Developers, however, frequently encounter spaghetti code: tangled, undocumented legacy software. Adapting a modern design to an old CMS or obsolete plugins sometimes takes twice as much time and money as a fresh Next.js project.

When is redesign alone justified? When the website already uses a modern framework, has a clean database and a fast server, but the brand's colors or logo have changed, or the interface needs to become more minimal and convenient.

If your website was built 5+ years ago, lacks proper mobile responsiveness, loads slowly and fails modern security standards, rebuilding from scratch is the only correct strategy. The key is 301 redirects for successful old pages so years of Google rankings are not lost.
