There is a well-known saying in IT: ‘People fall into two groups: those who do not yet make backups, and those who have already lost important data and now always do.’ Losing accounting records, contracts, customer databases or projects can be fatal for a company.
Data can be lost for reasons beyond hacking or ransomware. More often, the causes are physical hard-drive failure, power fluctuations, office flooding or fire, and an employee's accidental, careless deletion.
The global gold standard for data security is the ‘3-2-1 rule.’ It requires 3 copies of the data (1 primary working copy and 2 backups), stored on 2 different types of media (for example, a computer and an office NAS server), with 1 copy kept outside the office in secure cloud storage such as Google Cloud, AWS or Backblaze.
The process must be 100% automated. You cannot rely on an employee remembering to copy files to a USB drive in the evening. Dedicated software automatically creates encrypted copies every night and notifies the administrator when the process succeeds.
